My Meditation Journey

My first introduction to meditation was through yoga.  Even though I knew intellectually all the benefits of meditation, I still couldn’t sit and quiet my mind.  I just didn’t get it. I attempted off and on to meditate over the years but it didn’t click for me and I gave up.  

 

I gave up until one day when I was going through the ending of a relationship, I was feeling very anxious and didn’t know what to do…. So I sat down to meditate.  I set a timer on my phone for 15 minutes and sat in silence. Thoughts did still pop up but I stuck with it and kept coming back to my breath and re-focusing my mind.  At the end of the 15 minutes, I felt much better. I decided from that point forward I was going to meditate each day.

 

I haven’t stopped meditating since that day and I’ve been all over the world trying different techniques and teachers.  I’ve studied with Gurus at retreats, Swamis at ashrams, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Deepak Choprah, and many more.  I’ve done guided meditation, silent meditation, mantras, breathwork … you name it, I’ve tried it.  I’ve even done a Vipassana 10 day silent meditation retreat. Yes, that’s 10 days of no-talking and 10 hours of meditation each day.  What I’ve learned is that it doesn’t have to be extreme or difficult.  You don’t need to go anywhere to meditate, you can and should do it wherever you are.  You can begin with just 5 minutes a day and build from there.  It doesn’t need to be complicated…. You just need to start.
